Originally engraved by Jacques Bellin in 1745, the map was later reissued by Johann Baptist Homann in 1755 after he acquired the copperplate, responding to heightened European interest following the outbreak of the French and Indian War the previous year.

The cartography draws heavily on firsthand French sources, particularly the journals of fur trader and explorer Sieur de la Vérendrye and the writings of explorer-missionary Father Pierre de Charlevoix. Vérendrye’s accounts informed the placement of numerous Indigenous nations and villages, along with elements of the Great Lakes and their interconnected river systems. Charlevoix’s influence appears most clearly in the inclusion of the fictitious Lake Superior islands of Philippeaux, Pontchartrain, and St. Anne, among the earliest appearances of the so-called “ghost islands” that would persist on maps and confound explorers for nearly a century.

Throughout the map, French forts and missions are prominently identified, including Fort Frontenac, Fort Niagara, Mission François Xavier, and Port de Chécagou, located at the site of present-day Chicago. These sites illustrate the extent of French commercial and religious activity across the region and underscore the importance of waterways in facilitating movement and exchange.

In the lower right portion of the map, a subtle political message is conveyed through cartographic distortion. English colonial holdings in New York, Virginia, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania are deliberately reduced in scale, a common visual tactic intended to flatter royal patrons in Paris and to assert, at least symbolically, the perceived reach and influence of French interests in North America.

Inventory #19325

By: J.B. Shirley notes that "the projection used - two north and south polar views, each extending to the equator - is not a common one and it has been suggested that Blaeu intended this special map for the Spanish edition of the Atlas Major which was never completed." An unfortunate fire in 1672 destroyed the Blaeu Company and the atlas was never completed. The plate for this map was recovered by Valck and published circa 1695 in his own atlas. In early impressions such as this one, the imprint from the original Blaeu plate can still be seen in the lower cartouche.

The most significant geographical feature of this map is the depiction of California as an island. While there had been numerous maps depicting California as an island before this one, it is the only example by Blaeu to do so. Throughout their existence, the Blaeu Company had consistently projected North America with California attached and the coast jutting to the far northwestern reaches of the Pacific. In this example the northern Pacific includes the land and Strait of Anian and just east of Tartaria, a partial coastline of Compagnie Landt which remained in most maps of the area for around 100 years.

There are many geographic curiosities throughout the map that are worth noting. An early delineation of the Great Lake of North America can be seen by the incomplete large body of water just west of Virginia. In South America, there are two mythical lakes “Parime Lacus,” and “Lago de los Xarayes,” that remained for over 100 years. An incomplete Australia is depicted as being completely attached to New Guinea (labeled Terra dos Papous), while the islands of Tasmania and New Zealand are shown as nothing more than a speculative coastline.

Below the map are two beautifully engraved scenes of Adam and Eve. The Mississippi River does not appear on the map, while at the same time, the northeast reveals the discoveries made by Verrazzano and Cartier, with the St. Lawrence clearly denoted. It is the most influential map of Southeastern North America in the 17th century, and the first to depict Virginia and Florida. Hondius’s map covers from the Spanish colony of St. Augustine to the north, past the Outer Bank of the Carolinas all the way to Chesapeake Bay. The work is a synthesis of two maps of the previous century, the Le Moyne of Florida and the White map of Virginia and Carolina, both published by Theodore de Bry.

Though the map contains several errors, its influence was significant. One obvious error is the jutting horizontal projection which places Carolina and the Outer Banks too far to the east. The error occurred in earlier maps and is related to difficulties experienced by mariners in the 16th century in calculating longitude and accounting for magnetic variance. The distortion may well have been problematic for sailors running short on supplies following a trans-Atlantic crossing had they chosen to land there rather than in the West Indies where most first stopped. When the marine chronometer was invented in 1714 it made possible accurate measurements at sea.

While famous for its geographical contributions, the map is also noted for its beauty and charm. It is generously illustrated with various decorative elements drawn from early encounters with American indigenous peoples. Adding to the interest of the map are two large frigates and a canoe filled with natives. Sea monsters frolicking in the sea further embellish the map, and the cartouches are works of art in themselves. Inland we see a variety of wildlife, and a ‘queen’ and ‘king’ of indigenous peoples of Florida.

Inventory #10756

<a title="Authentic Antique Map of the Territory of Alaska: The Alaska Line: Alaska Steamship Co. In 1893 the company began using advertising posters created by Firmin Bouisset featuring a little girl using a piece of chocolate to write the name Chocolat Menier on a wall or window. The small girl's sweet innocence conveyed the sweet chocolate message through her "chocolate graffiti". It proved to be a highly successful image and became an internationally recognized symbol. The map was published out of Amsterdam as part of Linschoten’s Itinerario in 1596.

This fantastic map depicts the China, Korea as an island, and Japan to the island of Java and Marco Polo’s Beach with an eastward orientation, exceptionally accurate and mythical geographic detail, and a fine array of sea monsters, terrestrial animals, sailing ships, and two fabulous compass roses. Based on the travel accounts of Marco Polo, Linschoten depicts the location of the mythical land of Beach provincia auriferain, where Australia would eventually be discovered. In China, four large lakes are shown in the interior, based on Chinese legend. Korea is depicted as a large circular island and Japan is awkwardly misshapen.

While working as a personal secretary to the Portuguese Archbishop of Goa (1583 – 1589), Linschoten obtained numerous maps and documents from various Portuguese sources. In 1589, while traveling back to Portugal from Goa, Linschoten’s ship was pursued by an English fleet and lost its cargo during a storm while anchored off the Azores. Linschoten spent two years in Tercera after being persuaded to help recover the cargo and prepare notes from his time in Goa. A few years after his return home to the Netherlands, he published his maps in Itinerario which would aid the Dutch and the English in discovering trade routes to Asia. The discovery of these routes would ultimately break the century-long trade monopoly controlled by the Portuguese. Linschoten’s experiences and the publication of maps that followed would ultimately become one of the most important travel works of the era.

Inventory #19063

An Illustrated Map of Chicago, Youthful City of the Big Shoulders – Restless – Ingenious – Wilful – Violent – Proud to be Alive

By: Charles Turzak & Henry Chapman

Date: 1931 (dated) Chicago

Original Size: 22.5 x 37.5 inches (57.15 cm x 95.25 cm)

This is a superb example of Turzak & Chapman’s iconic map of the city of Chicago. Within days of its being published, British Air Marshal Arthur ‘Bomber’ Harris led a series of air raids on Berlin which did not relent till March of 1944. Despite the destruction of vast swathes of the city, the operation was considered a failure for it accomplished little in the way of crippling or even limiting Germany’s war efforts, and in fact led to reprisal attacks such as Operation Steinbock and London.

Printed below the map is a cut away distance scale with the following instructions. ‘This map is a photographic view of the world with the center at Berlin. Thus with the detachable scale distances can be measured along any line running thru Berlin. It should be noted that an inch at the center represents less mileage than an inch closer to the edges. The detachable scale has been designed to compensate for this and should be used only with the center on Berlin.

The photographic process used in making this map makes all distances measured with the tape approximate only. Distances are shown in statute miles. Lines between key cities do not represent regular air routes in all cases. They show distances between points that do not fall on a line going thru the center of the projection.’

This is one of many ‘Newsmaps’ published weekly by a propaganda arm of the US War Department called ‘Army Orientation Course of the Special Service Division Army Service Forces’. The maps employed bold typesetting and dramatic imagery to relay the most recent war news. The original map was created by Gerard Van Keulen out of Amsterdam in 1720.

By the late 17th century, the Van Keulen family had solidified themselves as the world’s finest maritime map publishing company. It wasn’t until 1720 that Gerard Van Keulen produced his first non-nautical map, being this large format map of North America comprised of two joined sheets. The reason for this map’s creation was to promote John Law’s Mississippi Company, which became known as one of the great financial bubbles in recorded history. Van Keulen was likely asked to produce this map in an attempt to lure his fellow Dutchmen in as investors. The first state of the map (this example) was produced at the height of the bubble in 1720, which would burst later that year.

Throughout the 17th century, the Great King Louie XIV had borrowed gold from his country to build his great palace among other things and by the time he died, the people of France were very poor and wanted their money back. To ease the masses, the government devalued what gold was still held by the people. One day a Scottish economist named John Law who had traveled Europe for nearly two decades came to Paris with a solution to their money problems. Give the people paper money in exchange for their gold which became quite popular throughout the country. However the people were still quite poor and John Law had just what they were looking for, a “get rich quick scheme.”

What John Law did was form, Compagnie d'Occident (Company of the West) which sold shares of France’s new territory, Louisiana (named after King Louie XIV). The territory was said to hold great commercial wealth in gold, rubies, diamonds, furs, etc., and everyone in France, nobleman to peasant could invest in shares for themselves. While everyone in France was scrambling for shares and prices rising rapidly, nearly nothing was being done in Louisiana. After all, it was over 800,000 square miles of harsh wilderness dominated by hundreds of Native American tribes speaking various languages. Eventually a combination of heightened share prices and inflation brought the paper money to gold ratio to roughly 5 to 1 and the bubble burst, leaving the people of France poor once again.

The map can best be explained as a compilation of detail and elements drawn from De Fer’s rare 1718 map “La France Occidental,” and De l’Ile’s 1703 map “Carte du Canada,” as well as his 1718 “La Louisiana.” While detail is abundant throughout this map, we will first focus on the Gulf Coast and the area of present day Texas. In 1685 Robert Cavelier de La Salle founded a French colony along the Bay of St. Louis noted on the map as Fort Francois. He intended to establish his colony at the mouth of the Mississippi river, but a combination of bad maps and navigational errors landed him approximately 400 miles west of his intended target. The colony lasted only three years and was abandoned due to harsh environmental conditions and hostile Native American’s. Shown in the map are some of La Salle’s routes eastward to the Mississippi. It was on one of these journeys that La Salle and five of his men were killed in a mutiny along the Brazos River.

The map displays incredible detail for its time throughout the La Louisiana as this was the main focus in the map’s production. In the northwest portion of the territory, several Native American tribes are noted as being enemies of the Spanish, the other dominant European power with interests in the area. Along the Mississippi, Fort Prudhome is depicted to be much larger than it actually was which may have been a tactic to embellish the idea of French control over the area. The delineation of the Great Lakes is about as accurate as any map could be for the time and the East Coast is shown with exceptional detail. For the most part both regions resemble De Fer’s maps; however Visscher’s influence can be noted in the depiction of a large Seneca Lac within New York and bordering Pennsylvania. In the lower right, two inserts illustrate a portion of the Gulf Coast and the mouth of the Mississippi River in detail derived from both De Fer’s map of 1718 and Valentin Devin’s earlier manuscript map of the area.

This is undoubtedly a must have map for any high end collection of America maps, particularly with regard to the early mapping of French Louisiana and Texas. As mentioned before, this is an example of the first of two states produced of the map. While the first state has the name Gerard Van Keulen at the bottom of the title cartouche, the second state bears the imprint Chez la Veuve de Jo. Van Keulen & Fils Marchands Libraires, Avec Privilege. Gerard died in 1726 and the second state was issued circa 1730 by his widowed wife Ludwina Konst and her son Johanne II.

Inventory #18736

By: Alvin J Johnson

Date: 1862 (published) New York

Original Size: 12.25 x 15 inches (31 x 38 cm)

This is a reproduction print of an original antique map of Mexico.
