1690 Ristretto del Mediterraneo...

Size Guide

By: Vincenzo Maria Coronelli
Date: 1690 (circa) Venice
Original Size: 18.5 x 43 inches (47 x 109 cm)
This is a marvelous Vintage Map Shop reproduction of a superb example of Coronelli's four-sheet map of the Mediterranean Sea, originally published in Venice in 1690. This monumental map was produced in association with J.B. Nolin in Paris.  It is richly embellished with coats of arms and four decorative cartouches,  and is one of the most decorative large format maps of the Mediterranean published in Italy in the 17th Century. The main title is on a banner in a large cartouche, with a secondary title in a garland above Greece; an "explanation" is on a banner draped between an elephant, a Venetian lion and an eagle, and the scale cartouche is decorated with a pair of compasses. Around the map are scattered the armorials of cities and states.
Vincenzo Coronelli is perhaps best known for the globes he constructed over the years for various dignitaries of the era. From 1681 to 1683 he constructed a pair of globes which were ten feet in diameter for the king, at a weight of nearly 4000 pounds. The fame and importance of Coronelli's globe led to the production of a 42 inch diameter globe in 1688, of which examples reside in a number of major institutional collections around the world.
