The two most notable changes from the previous states are the addition of the Salomon Islands for the first time since their discovery in 1568 and the removal of a southwestern bulge in South America. Other additions include numerous sailing ships, the placement of C. The Great Lakes will not make their appearance until the 1670s with the works of the French cartographer Nicolas Sanson. In the southwestern Pacific, New Guinea is shown to be completely connected to Terra Australis and ultimately Magellanica and Tierra del Fuego. It is the most influential map of Southeastern North America in the 17th century, and the first to depict Virginia and Florida. Hondius’s map covers from the Spanish colony of St. Augustine to the north, past the Outer Bank of the Carolinas all the way to Chesapeake Bay. The work is a synthesis of two maps of the previous century, the Le Moyne of Florida and the White map of Virginia and Carolina, both published by Theodore de Bry.

Though the map contains several errors, its influence was significant. One obvious error is the jutting horizontal projection which places Carolina and the Outer Banks too far to the east. The error occurred in earlier maps and is related to difficulties experienced by mariners in the 16th century in calculating longitude and accounting for magnetic variance. The distortion may well have been problematic for sailors running short on supplies following a trans-Atlantic crossing had they chosen to land there rather than in the West Indies where most first stopped. When the marine chronometer was invented in 1714 it made possible accurate measurements at sea.

While famous for its geographical contributions, the map is also noted for its beauty and charm. It is generously illustrated with various decorative elements drawn from early encounters with American indigenous peoples. Adding to the interest of the map are two large frigates and a canoe filled with natives. Sea monsters frolicking in the sea further embellish the map, and the cartouches are works of art in themselves. Inland we see a variety of wildlife, and a ‘queen’ and ‘king’ of indigenous peoples of Florida.

Inventory #10756

By: Humphrey Phelps

Date: 1847 (dated) New York

Original Size: 28.5 x 21 inches

This is a fine reproduction of one of the most sought after, decorative map of the United States and Mexico, published during the Mexican War.

This exciting work by Humphrey Phelps features the new, enlarged state of Texas. Chatelain's "very curious map" is one of the most spectacular examples of the marriage between cartography and graphic art. While the focus of the map is the Americas, it extends to the entire Pacific including the East Indies and Japan, and all the Atlantic including large areas of western Europe and Africa. The map is based on De Fer’s map of 1713 and was published in Chatelain’s monumental work, Atlas Historique.

One’s eye is immediately drawn to the fantastic mythical island of California, which ‘existed’ until relatively recent times. A notation alludes to the controversy provoked by Father Kino's map of the peninsular form. Thus, this was one of the first European maps to question the myth of the island of California. Aside from this, much of the map is remarkably accurate in detail, and with his usual thoroughness and eye for detail, his desire to provide information to the world about newly charted territories, Chatelain creates lifelike images of many of the indigenous peoples and their industries, all of which he includes in this wonderful map.

Some examples in vignettes at the top of the map include a study of beavers and local Indian tribes interacting with them (hunting), and a picturesque view of Niagara Falls in which many beavers also appear. In the top center of the map are nine medallions featuring explorers notable for their voyages to the New World, including Columbus, Vespucci, Magellan, Le Maire, Drake and Dampier. The tracks of these explorers are traced throughout the oceans along with marvelous depictions of their ships.

The upper right quadrant features indigenous peoples of Eastern Canada actively engaged in fishing and processing/drying of fish in a splendidly organized and productive fashion. Near the industrial scene, in the upper right hand corner, Chatelain features an enlarged section of the Straits of Gibralter, with parts of both Spain and northern Africa included.

Below this vignette we find the Cape of Good Hope, also enlarged and showing considerable detail. Between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn, Chatelain confines himself primarily though not exclusively to the delineation of the continents and bodies of water which he pictures. In the confines of the continents themselves, we find that the Great Lakes are well defined in North America, which is quite devoid of geographic detail with the exception of major rivers and a few place names, including a few missions and forts. With great skill Chatelain hides the unknown northern regions of the continent, and the northeastern US and Quebec are elongated. The South Pacific features newly discovered lands such as the Solomon Islands shown to be south of California, and a number of other partially delineated islands labeled ‘seen but unknown’. Also included are incomplete coastlines of Australia, New Zealand and Tasmania.

The vignettes in rococo borders which surround the map provide a vivid panorama of the New World, and those embellishing the lower portion of the map include grand scenes of rituals of the Aztecs and Incas, including human sacrifice in graphic detail. A confrontation between mounted European troops and a large group of indigenous peoples is presented. Countless intriguing scenes are depicted to increase the viewer’s understanding and knowledge of the New World.

Galleons and frigates sail the high seas. Other scenes depict the traditions of indigenous peoples, including a fascinating scene of a beach covered by sea turtles, another of llamas being used as pack animals. Depiction of the southern hemisphere also includes inset maps and town plans including the Mississippi Delta, the Isthmus of Panama, the Rio de la Plata, Acapulco Bay, Mexico City, Havana, and Veracruz. Architectural edifices and religious activities undertaken by local populations are depicted as are mining and sugar operations. On four sheets joined. Hornaday’s influential map, originally published in the 1889 Annual Report of the Smithsonian Institution, documents the dramatic decline of the American Bison from the early 1700s to the late 19th century.

Once numbering between 30 to 60 million, bison populations fell to fewer than 1,000 by 1889, largely due to overhunting, habitat loss, and aggressive U.S. expansionist policies. The map uses a series of dated boundary lines to show the species' shrinking range—from the eastern woodlands of the Alleghenies in the 1730s to a few isolated pockets on the fringes of the Rocky Mountains by the end of the 19th century.

Hornaday’s map was among the first scientific attempts to visualize the scale of a manmade extinction in progress. The extermination of the bison was not merely an environmental catastrophe but a deliberate effort to subdue Native American populations, for whom the animal was a central source of food, clothing, and cultural identity. The rise of the railroad only hastened the slaughter—passengers were encouraged to shoot bison from moving trains, and between 1872 and 1874, an estimated 5.4 million bison were killed.

Hornaday, a pioneering taxidermist and conservationist, hoped the map would serve as both a warning and a call to action. It helped galvanize early conservation movements and contributed to the establishment of Yellowstone National Park in 1872, the first national park in the world. While initial protections were weak and enforcement slow, the map remains a powerful artifact of ecological loss and an early turning point in the American environmental consciousness. Today, it stands as a stark reminder of how quickly a dominant species can vanish when exploitation outpaces stewardship.

Inventory #12465

By: John Wesley Powell

Date of Original: 1890 (published) New York

Original Size: 21 x 18 inches

This is a fine print reproduction of a fascinating map showing the linguistic distribution of Indigenous tribes and nations across North America. The map offers a unique anthropological perspective rather than conventional political or physical geography.

Created for the Eleventh Census of the United States in 1890, the map draws on information gathered by the Bureau of Ethnology and reflects data compiled under the direction of geologist and explorer John Wesley Powell. Each linguistic group is represented by a distinct color, highlighting the geographic extent—and, in some cases, surprising confinement—of Native American language families.

The map reveals striking contrasts in the spread and density of certain languages. Broad, contiguous regions are associated with expansive language families such as Algonquian, Siouan, and Athabaskan, whose speakers often led nomadic or semi-nomadic lifestyles, adapting to wide-ranging environments and following seasonal game. In contrast, linguistic groups along the Pacific coast and in parts of the Southeast appear more compact, reflecting cultures that were more sedentary, reliant on fishing, agriculture, or localized trade networks. These patterns reflect how natural features such asmountains, rivers, plains, and coastlines, influenced both mobility and cultural exchange.

Notably absent are the typical political boundaries and topographic markers found on standard maps. This absence centers attention on Indigenous identity and presence, affirming the deep-rooted cultural diversity that existed long before modern nation-states were imposed. By focusing on language, the map captures a critical dimension of Native life that speaks to shared heritage, oral tradition, and worldview.

Inventory #11243

By: Rubén Travieso

Date of Original: 1984 (published)

Original Size: 24 x 18 inches (61 x 45.75 cm)

This vintage map reproduction shows a vibrant and playful pictorial map, by Rubén Travieso, created for Eastern Airlines, the "Official Airline of Carnaval Miami," in 1984.
