The original map was created by Gerard Van Keulen out of Amsterdam in 1720.

By the late 17th century, the Van Keulen family had solidified themselves as the world’s finest maritime map publishing company. It wasn’t until 1720 that Gerard Van Keulen produced his first non-nautical map, being this large format map of North America comprised of two joined sheets. The reason for this map’s creation was to promote John Law’s Mississippi Company, which became known as one of the great financial bubbles in recorded history. Van Keulen was likely asked to produce this map in an attempt to lure his fellow Dutchmen in as investors. The first state of the map (this example) was produced at the height of the bubble in 1720, which would burst later that year.

Throughout the 17th century, the Great King Louie XIV had borrowed gold from his country to build his great palace among other things and by the time he died, the people of France were very poor and wanted their money back. To ease the masses, the government devalued what gold was still held by the people. One day a Scottish economist named John Law who had traveled Europe for nearly two decades came to Paris with a solution to their money problems. Give the people paper money in exchange for their gold which became quite popular throughout the country. However the people were still quite poor and John Law had just what they were looking for, a “get rich quick scheme.”

What John Law did was form, Compagnie d'Occident (Company of the West) which sold shares of France’s new territory, Louisiana (named after King Louie XIV). The territory was said to hold great commercial wealth in gold, rubies, diamonds, furs, etc., and everyone in France, nobleman to peasant could invest in shares for themselves. While everyone in France was scrambling for shares and prices rising rapidly, nearly nothing was being done in Louisiana. After all, it was over 800,000 square miles of harsh wilderness dominated by hundreds of Native American tribes speaking various languages. Eventually a combination of heightened share prices and inflation brought the paper money to gold ratio to roughly 5 to 1 and the bubble burst, leaving the people of France poor once again.

The map can best be explained as a compilation of detail and elements drawn from De Fer’s rare 1718 map “La France Occidental,” and De l’Ile’s 1703 map “Carte du Canada,” as well as his 1718 “La Louisiana.” While detail is abundant throughout this map, we will first focus on the Gulf Coast and the area of present day Texas. In 1685 Robert Cavelier de La Salle founded a French colony along the Bay of St. Louis noted on the map as Fort Francois. He intended to establish his colony at the mouth of the Mississippi river, but a combination of bad maps and navigational errors landed him approximately 400 miles west of his intended target. The colony lasted only three years and was abandoned due to harsh environmental conditions and hostile Native American’s. Shown in the map are some of La Salle’s routes eastward to the Mississippi. It was on one of these journeys that La Salle and five of his men were killed in a mutiny along the Brazos River.

The map displays incredible detail for its time throughout the La Louisiana as this was the main focus in the map’s production. In the northwest portion of the territory, several Native American tribes are noted as being enemies of the Spanish, the other dominant European power with interests in the area. Along the Mississippi, Fort Prudhome is depicted to be much larger than it actually was which may have been a tactic to embellish the idea of French control over the area. The delineation of the Great Lakes is about as accurate as any map could be for the time and the East Coast is shown with exceptional detail. For the most part both regions resemble De Fer’s maps; however Visscher’s influence can be noted in the depiction of a large Seneca Lac within New York and bordering Pennsylvania. In the lower right, two inserts illustrate a portion of the Gulf Coast and the mouth of the Mississippi River in detail derived from both De Fer’s map of 1718 and Valentin Devin’s earlier manuscript map of the area.

This is undoubtedly a must have map for any high end collection of America maps, particularly with regard to the early mapping of French Louisiana and Texas. As mentioned before, this is an example of the first of two states produced of the map. While the first state has the name Gerard Van Keulen at the bottom of the title cartouche, the second state bears the imprint Chez la Veuve de Jo. Van Keulen & Fils Marchands Libraires, Avec Privilege. Gerard died in 1726 and the second state was issued circa 1730 by his widowed wife Ludwina Konst and her son Johanne II.

Inventory #18736

Carte de la Louisiane et du Cours du Mississipi Dressee sur un Grand Nombre de Memoires Entr'autres sur ceux de Mr. le Maire

By: Delisle / Covens & Mortier

Date: 1730 (circa) Amsterdam

Original Size: 18.5 x 24.5 inches (44 x 60 cm)

This is a fine reproduction of an authentic antique map of the French territory in America known as "La Louisiana," which extended from the Rocky Mountains to the English colonies, just east of the Appalachians. The knowledge obtained from the expedition is show in detail that sharply contrasts the vast unexplored lands of present day California, Nevada, Utah, and Oregon, which was at the time regarded as Spanish Territory. Also detailed within the map are the notes and discoveries of Zebulon Pike's expedition to the Rockies (1806 - 1807).

At the time of printing, America was on the move west, though the progress of civilization with bound to the the waterways of the Great Lakes, and the Ohio and Mississippi River. Other noteworthy territories include Mississippi, which in this map includes present day Alabama, the Missouri Territory that not only encompasses much of the western portion of America, but extends north into present day Canada, and the Northwest Territory that spans from present day northern Illinois (containing Chicago) up through Wisconsin, the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Minnesota and part of what is now North Dakota.

While the 1755 Mitchell map of North America was instrumental in distinguishing geo-political borders of the 18th century and beyond, (most notably for its use during the 1783 Treaty of Paris) a similar comparison can be made for the Melish map and it's importance throughout the 19th century. One such example of the important role the map played in devising such boundaries can be found in Article V of the 1848 Treaty of Hidalgo Guadeloupe. The map was used to define a new U.S. / Mexico border that consisted of the Rio Grande northwest from its mouth to the point where it strikes the southern boundary of New Mexico (roughly 32 degrees north), then due west from this point to the 110th meridian west, then north along the 110th Meridian to the Gila River and down the river to its mouth.

As previously noted, the map was also utilized as a visual embodiment of Manifest Destiny. Thomas Jefferson referred to the map as "a luminous view of the comparative possessions of different powers in our America." Shortly after the publication of this map, the Anglo-American Convention of 1818 extended the U.S.-Canadian border westwards along the 49th parallel from the Lake of the Woods to the Rocky Mountains.Within the same treaty, the British and Americans agreed to jointly occupy the Oregon Country that at the time extended North of the 49th parallel into present day British Columbia. This treaty essentially guaranteed the United States a contiguous stretch of land from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean.

Inventory #11484

By: Albert Richard

Date: 1939 (dated) Milwaukee, WI

Original Size: 19 x 26 inches

An enthusiastic map of the United States, celebrating College Football programs and universities from coast to coast. In 1727 he began working with the Board of Trade and Plantations to help settle boundary disputes between British colonists and the French. By 1730, the Board began requesting detailed maps of the region. Popple announced that he had commenced work on this map in 1731 and ultimately completed his work by 1733, however the sales just weren’t there. He sold production rights of the map to Samuel Harding and William H. Toms in 1739, right at the “War of Jenkins’ Ear,” formally began. While the origins of the name of the war are interesting, they are not relevant to this map. The conflict dates back to 1731 when a Spanish privateer severed British captain Robert Jenkins's ear as punishment for raiding Spanish ships. As the English wanted retribution for this act, tensions rose between the two powers and conflict over land soon began in present day Georgia. This map is the first map to present the colony of Georgia, which was chartered in London in July of 1732. Soon thereafter

James Edward Oglethrope landed in the region with 120 colonists and reported back to England in 1734 with several maps, sea charts, and sketches of the new colony, to which Henry Popple incorporated into his map. The inclusion of the Colony of Georgia did several things. First, is moved the official boundary of the British colonies further south to Florida, which was under Spanish control at the height of the “War of Jenkins’ Ear.” This inclusion of the new colony added an extra layer of protection for the more well-established colonies to the north. Back then the northern colonies were more heavily fortified, so land and distance was a useful advantage in terms of protection and defense for the southern colonies. The inclusion of Georgia also makes Popple’s map the first map to show all of the thirteen colonies that would eventually convene in Philadelphia to sign the Declaration of Independence from Great Britain.

When one views the monumental work they can be drawn in to the fine detail throughout or observe the map as a whole. Both methods achieve important visual distinctions. As noted by Edmund Halley the map is remarkably detailed and accurate as Popple drew from a wide array of sources, both well established by other map makers and new information from the very people that inhabited North America. Nearly every single town and settlement is accurately located along with the wide array of Native American tribes that dominated the continent at the time of printing.

What Popple did with the color coding of his map cannot be understated. He made territory claimed by the Dutch Red/Purple, the Spanish is Yellow, the English Red, Indian lands are Green, and the French lands Blue. Now, when one looks at the map, it can be difficult to find the blue color representing French controlled land. That is because it only appears in thin lines along the southern stretch of the Mississippi and the northern bank of the St. Laurence River, thus by comparison to the British colonies seems miniscule and insignificant. This began a multiple-decade’s long run of maps by both the French and English where the presentation of “their territory” dwarfs that of the other.

Though Henry Popple’s map was presented to the world with little enthusiasm, it is now regarded as an extraordinary achievement and was relentlessly copied by his contemporaries not only in England, but throughout the ever-important trade of European map makers. Detroit and the rest of the state of Michigan had a long-standing experience with prohibition as it had passed the Damon Law of 1917, which prohibited the bringing or carrying into the state, or the receipt or possession of any intoxicating liquors.

The map features a wide array of whimsical pictographs, mocking places and cultures throughout the United States with a common theme of beer, wine, and spirits. Nearly every placename is written as a play-on-words such as Chi-Keg-O, Albu-Corky, spo-Can, Vir-GIN-ia, and Port-Land to name a few. The map features a scale of distance in pints, and a compass rose with "Pints of the Compass" reading "Norse," "Souse," "Yeast," and "Wets." The "12 (nautical) Mile Limit" of the territorial sea in which the U.S. Coast Guard had jurisdiction is delineated in the Pacific and Atlantic by a string of floating kegs or barrels (suggestively containing alcohol).

Other imagery is very indicative of the 1920s. The detailed depiction of U.S. time zones underscores the map’s practical use for travelers and businesses navigating the interconnected world.

Pheil’s map exemplifies the technological optimism of the early 20th century, representing a world increasingly unified by shared systems and innovations. While modern technology has simplified global timekeeping, this artifact serves as a historical reminder of the challenges and achievements in managing time across a globalized society.

Inventory #12875

By: Daniel K. This map entices with its delightful blend of humor and satire, featuring place names that are intentionally inaccurate in terms of their actual geographic locations. The whimsical presentation serves as a testament to the perceived lack of interest that New Yorkers had for the broader expanse of the country, around the time of the 1939 World's Fair.

The skewed nature of the map is immediately apparent with regards to the general shape of the United States. Looking closer, we find it replete with inaccurate locations of cities, states, rivers, and lakes.

For example, the order of Great Lakes from east to west is as follows; Lake Ontario, Lake Champlain, Lake Louise, Lake Michigan (as Lake Huron), Lake Superior (as Lake Michigan), and Great Salt Lake (as Lake Superior). Furthermore, the cities of Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul are found in Illinois which is in the place of Indiana whereas Minneapolis and Indianapolis are dubbed "the Twin Cities," and located in southeast Michigan.

In the south, we fin Nashville in Florida and four Swanee Rivers. Florida is oversized and the only state with Palm Trees (or any trees for the matter), suggesting its importance to New Yorkers as a winter haven. In the west, Nevada is a city in the state of Reno, Yellowstone Park is in Colorado, Wyoming is a city of Montana located just above Oregon and Washington (which are flipped), and California is bordered on the north and south by the states of San Francisco and Hollywood.

The vignettes and text boxes are also of interest. In the lower right, elements of the city are depicted in a sleek and grand manner suggesting a sophistication to the modern city of New York. Head to the left of the title (or west) and we are met with an emigrant horse-drawn wagon with an oxen and pack mule, roaming through a barren and ominous landscape.
