This is a fine print reproduction of Hemisphaerium Stellatum Boreale Antiquum by Andreas Cellarius, presenting a richly imagined view of the northern constellations.

The chart depicts the heavens as if seen from beyond the celestial sphere, reversing the orientation of the constellations from their familiar appearance on Earth. This unusual perspective follows a cosmological idea associated with Petrus Plancius, in which the stars are fixed upon a great sphere surrounding the Earth, moving in harmony with it. Zodiacal figures and mythological forms are engraved with clarity and depth, combining scientific structure with the visual language of classical astronomy.

Cellarius, born in 1596 and later active in the Netherlands, was among the leading celestial cartographers of his time. His most important work, Harmonia Macrocosmica, was first issued in 1660 by Jan Jansson as a supplement to the Atlas Novus. Conceived as part of a larger cosmographical project, the atlas brought together a series of celestial charts begun in the 1640s, illustrating competing theories of the universe from Ptolemaic to Copernican systems. These engravings stand at the intersection of scientific inquiry and artistic achievement during the Dutch Golden Age.

Cellarius’ charts remain among the most sought-after works in celestial cartography, admired for both their visual impact and historical importance. This example derives from the later edition issued by Valk & Schenk in 1708, printed from the original plates with minimal alteration. The continued use of these plates speaks to the lasting appeal of Cellarius’ designs, which represent one of the most ambitious and beautifully executed celestial atlases of the early modern period.
