Totius Africae Nova Totius Africae Nova Representatio qua praeter diverson in ea Status et Re guines...
By: Johann Baptiste Homann
Date: 1715 (published) Amsterdam
Original Size: 19 x 22 (48.3 x 56 cm)
This is a reproduction of an early 18th century antique map of Africa by Johann Baptiste Homann. It offers a full view of the African continent as well as the Arabian Peninsula and portions of Southern Europe based on the best sources and information available at the time.
Overall, its is a highly inaccurate map, both in the shape of the continent and nomenclature throughout. It includes both real and fictitious St. Helena Islands and the source of the Nile is inaccurately shown as two large lakes, side by side. In reality, the source of the Nile are the thousands of rivers that run down the Ethiopian Highlands, which capture the precipitation from the monsoon winds of the Indian Ocean.
The map is colored by region and identifies topographical features and settlements. The elaborate title cartouche depicts natives with cherubs overhead and traders, monkeys and pyramids in the background.
