This is a fine print reproduction of a spectacular street and railway map of Chicago as it was in the last decade of the 19th century. The map was originally produced as a folding map for travelers visiting and living in the city.
This map of Chicago shows the city divided into wards by red lines with boulevards and parks shaded in green. Steam railroad, cable car and horse car lines are delineated throughout the map. Radiating out from downtown Chicago are several circular line of distance notice 1, 2, 3, and 4 miles from the city center.
Several noteworthy places can be found within the map, including the Palmer House Grand Pacific, and Leland Hotel, the Rand McNally Headquarters, Lincoln Park and Lake Park (which would later become Grant Park), and the Union Stockyards to name a few. Early Chicago neighborhoods such as Bridgeport, Brighton Park, Lawndale, Humboldt Park, and Avondale are also given special attention. In the right hand portion of the map, a list of railroads is provided.
