Novi Belgii Novaeque Angliae Nec Non partis Virginiae Tabula multis in locis emendata...
By: Nicholaus Visscher
Date: 1656 (published) Amsterdam
Original Size: 18.5 x 22 inches (47 x 56 cm)
This is a stunning reproduction of Visscher's important map of the Northeast of North America in the mid-seventeenth century, with a large inset view of New Amsterdam (New York City).
This inset is the third known engraved view of the city. Manhattan is correctly shown as an island, clearly showing the settlement at the southern end of the island. The map is evidence of Dutch aspirations regarding retaining the New Netherlands colony. Its advanced geography, based on the 1651 map of Jansson, was of paramount importance to the colony, which needed to make known its vulnerability to English attack.
British settlements and Indian villages are recorded and vignettes illustrating fauna and Indian fortifications embellish the map. Visscher's map is highly sought after among maps of this region.
This particular reproduction is of the extremely rare first edition of Visscher's map.
