This promotional pictorial map of Los Angeles and Southern California was created by Mary Hall-Atwood and published in 1932 by the Union Oil Company as an official guide to the Tenth Olympic Games. Issued as Los Angeles was rapidly expanding, it blends artistic charm, geographic detail, and Olympic celebration, and became one of the signature pictorial maps of early 20th-century California.

The main bird’s-eye map spans from the Pacific Coast and Santa Monica Mountains to Pasadena, Pomona, and the inland citrus valleys. Highways, boulevards, streetcar lines, and motor routes are clearly drawn, guiding visitors to major Olympic venues such as the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, Olympic Park, the Riviera equestrian courses, the Marine Stadium in Long Beach, and the Olympic Village in Baldwin Hills.

Illustrated vignettes of sailboats, orchards, oil fields, mountains, missions, and aircraft animate the scene, capturing the California ideal promoted to travelers. Strip maps along the sides extend the view up and down the coast, while a small route map below directs motorists toward the Inland Empire. A detailed legend on the right margin identifies the exact locations of all 1932 Olympic events.

NOTE: The original map has text and charts on the reverse that appear in the image. Since our images are made from high resolution scans of the original maps that we own, this is consistent with how the original map should look.
