This is a fine print reproduction of the 1872 bird’s-eye view of Charleston, South Carolina, drawn by Camille N. Drie. Seen from above the harbor looking inland, the composition centers on the Cooper River waterfront, where rows of wharves extend into the water and are crowded with sailing vessels and steamships, underscoring Charleston’s role as a major Atlantic port.

The city’s street plan is laid out with clarity, with major thoroughfares such as King Street running prominently through the dense commercial core. Meeting Street, Broad Street, and East Bay Street are all identifiable, lined with tightly packed buildings, churches, and public structures. St. Michael’s Church and St. Philip’s Church rise above the surrounding rooftops, anchoring the historic center, while the Custom House and nearby civic buildings emphasize the importance of trade and administration along the waterfront.

To the east, the harbor opens toward Fort Sumter, positioned at the entrance to Charleston Harbor and already well known as the site where the Civil War began just over a decade earlier. The Ashley River and surrounding marshlands frame the city, contrasting the orderly grid of streets with the more natural landscape beyond.

Rail lines and depots are visible along the lower portion of the view, linking Charleston to inland markets, while inset illustrations along the bottom margin depict notable buildings such as City Hall. Issued during the height of American bird’s-eye view production, this map provides a highly specific and detailed look at Charleston as it stood in the early Reconstruction era, combining commercial activity, historic landmarks, and urban structure into a striking bird's-eye-view.
