This is a Vintage Map Shop reproduction showing a bird’s eye view of San Francisco, CA looking west over the city, with Golden Gate and the Pacific Ocean in the background.
As with most maps and views, the closer one looks, the more they will find. This cannot be understated with this incredible print as individual buildings, parks, and streets are labeled throughout and painstaking detail is given to the varying topography of city. Even the ships making their way in and out of the bay can be easily identified as wind and steam powered vessels. The end result of the work put into this bird’s eye view is a remarkable snapshot of a bustling, relatively new American city as it celebrates the opportunity to host the Panama Pacific Exposition on it’s norther shore.
The original lithograph was produced in 1912 to promote the 1915 World’s Fair of San Francisco, which was officially known as the Panama-Pacific International Exposition. This example was reproduced in 1968 from the original lithograph in the collections of the Society of California Pioneers to commemorate the opening of the First Savings Building, California Sansome, San Francisco.
