By: Matthaus Seutter

Date: 1740 (published) Augsburg

Original Size: 22.5 x 19.5 inches (57 x 49.5 cm)

This is a fine print reproduction of an mid-18th century map of Scotland by Matthaus Seutter.

Like most maps by Seutter, this example presents highly decorative title cartouche as a prominent feature of the map. Minute details including place names, topography, rivers, and lakes are surprisingly legible due to the strong plate impression of the map. The final result is a great map for anyone that wants to locate an ancestral town that map not be included in other maps of the same era.

What can be referred to as modern cartography has been around for over 550 years. Throughout that time an enormous amount of new land was discovered, cities were founded while others perished. International trade and travel became the norm, political borders were ever-changing, and numerous wars were waged. With all that being said, hundreds of thousands of maps were created that show such events and episodes in time.
