Boston | The Colour of an Old City. A Map of Boston, decorative and historical.

By: Edwin Olsen & Blake Clark

Original Date: 1926 (dated) Boston

Size of Original: 29 x 37.75 inches (73.4 x 96 cm)

This charming, vibrant map of Boston depicts the core of the downtown area from approximately Massachusetts Avenue east, and encompasses the Charles River with parts of Cambridge and Charlestown. Boston Harbor, Fort Point Channel and part of South Boston are also included.

The map's borders are embellished with vignettes of historical scenes, buildings and monuments. At top center Boston's coat of arms is faithfully rendered and six inset historical maps and views depict the city and its environs at various times in its history. Biplanes dot the sky above the river while myriad seagoing vessels ply the waters.

The title is depicted on the sail of a Norse longboat, perhaps a reference to persisting theories regarding the arrival of Norsemen to the area long centuries before the first Pilgrims.
