This is a fine print reproduction of a pictorial bird's-eye-view depiction of Seattle, created by Irwin Caplan and published by the Seattle-based department store Frederick & Nelson in 1968, offers a whimsical glimpse into the Emerald City.
This imaginative portrayal presents a unique perspective of Seattle's bustling harbor, undulating hills, and soaring skyscrapers, including iconic landmarks such as the Space Needle and the Seafirst Building proudly displaying a flag bearing the inscription "Big Daddy." The streets below are bustling with both vehicular and pedestrian traffic, while six inset illustrations provide closer glimpses into various facets of Seattle life, including the Public City Market, City Center, and the Evergreen Point Floating Bridge.
Hovering above the cityscape, a jet pulls a banner reading "Boeing Job No 50327," a clear homage to the Boeing Company, which had its roots in Seattle from 1916 until its headquarters relocation to Chicago in 2001. In the foreground, a lighthearted scene unfolds with beachgoers and a totem pole, symbolizing the indigenous heritage of the Pacific Northwest.
This artwork bears striking resemblance to pieces by Jim Michaelson, who produced a similar poster of San Francisco published by Trend Graphics and Sparta Graphics in the same year.
