This is a finely detailed Vintage Map Shop reproduction of a sea chart of the Caribbean from the late 17th century. The original map from which this reprint is make was published Joh Ogilby out of London in 1671. Ogilby's map of the West Indies, based on Hessel Gerritaz’ chart of 1631 and Blaeu's map of 1635, and Janssons map of 1636.
The map displays numerous sea ports and towns from Virginia in the north to Mexico Honduras the northern coast of South America and all the islands in between. Florida is depicted in a form consistent with early Dutch Sea Charts and the southeast coastline of America protrudes too far east. Coastal cities and ports are noted with Spanish, Portuguese, and English nomenclature.
The lovely title cartouche features a vignette depicting indigenous peoples and European explorers. The seas are embellished with rhumb lines, sailing ships and compass roses. A decorative scale of distance can be found in the lower right presenting German and Spanish miles.
