This is a fine print reproduction of an absolutely lovely travel poster, originally painted by Hugo Alessi (name in the lower left), first issued by the Midland Great Western Railway of Ireland in the year 1900.
The primary function of this poster, like any travel poster was to encourage tourism in Ireland, more specifically in the western side of the country. This poster was primarily distributed throughout North America. The poster presents a variety of scenes from the western coast of Ireland. Places depicted in the work include Galway, Achill, Connemara, and Sligo. The scenes show off western Ireland’s coastal landscape, historical graveyards (dating back to 543 A.D.) and interior lakes. At the bottom, the poster reads “For illustrated tourist guides, or other particulars, apply to the manager’s office, Broadstone Station, Dublin.”
The Midland Great Western Railway (MGWR) was the third largest Irish gauge railway company in Ireland. It was incorporated in 1845 and absorbed into the Great Southern Railways in 1924. At its peak the MGWR had a network of 538 miles (866 km), making it Ireland's third largest network after the Great Southern and Western Railway and the Great Northern Railway of Ireland.
