This is a giclée print reproduction of a marvelous promotional travel poster from 1954. It was part of a series of maps commissioned by the Comite National de Propagande en Faveur du Vin to celebrate and promote the legendary wine regions of France. French artist, illustrator and print maker, Remy Hetreau took on this task, creating some magnificent posters highlighting local wineries of eight different regions.
Here we find the sun shining merrily over the entire Bordeaux area, and a chateau embellishing one side of the map while on the opposite side sits a goddess of libation astride a large wooden wine cask, a goblet in one hand and a flagon of wine in the other. A ship loaded with the same sort of casks leaves shore with sales furled to the wind. Grapes and grape leaves are entwined and join through a scroll cartouche. The fleur-de-lis and the French Lion are featured in a coat of arms at the top of the map. The title is contained in a ribbon cartouche at the top of the map.
Bordeaux is a port city on the Garonne River in southwestern France. Known as an international capitol in the world of wine, the city is home to one of the most prominent wine fairs, Vinexpo (est. 1981). Today, Bordeaux wine is made by more than 8,500 vintages produce over 700 million bottles of wine, ranging from large quantities of everyday table wine, to some of the most expensive and prestigious wines in the world.
