This is a fine print reproduction of a richly illustrated pictorial map, originally created in 1932 by artist William Forsyth McIlwraith and reissued in 1980 by Binford & Mort Publishing, offers a sweeping bird’s-eye view of the American Northwest. We are happy to offer fine print reproductions of both examples. The first issue from 1932 is more yellow and olive-green in color and the later issue from 1980 has rich blues and vibrant green colors.
The map vividly traces the historic Oregon Trail, the primary route for pioneers journeying from Missouri to the Oregon Territory during the mid-19th century. The map also highlights other significant trails of the era, including the Humboldt, Applegate, Bozeman, and the early segments of the Santa Fe Trail. Prominent frontier settlements such as Fort Sutter, Virginia City, Fort Vancouver, Fort Walla Walla, Oregon City, Fort Boise, Fort Bridger, and Fort Laramie are depicted along these routes. Encasing the central illustration is an ornate border featuring portraits of notable American figures, scenes depicting life along the trail, state seals of future states established along these paths, and images of wagon trains traversing the landscape.
Binford & Mort Publishing, established in 1930 and previously known as Metropolitan Press and Binford & Mort, was once the largest book publisher in the Pacific Northwest. The company focused on regional publications, producing numerous significant works on Oregon's history, including this detailed and colorful map. The Binford and Mort Publishing company is no longer in business.
