Figureheads are carved sculptures that were traditionally mounted on the bow of sailing ships. They served as both decorative ornaments and powerful symbols of a vessel's identity, reflecting the owner's wealth, national pride, or the ship's name. Although they are most closely associated with the great sailing ships of the 17th - 19th centuries, the practice dates back much earlier. Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, and Vikings all adorned their vessels with carved figures, often depicting animals or mythical creatures believed to offer protection at sea.
