This is a fine print reproduction of a rare WWI recruitment poster by the American born artist and illustrator Isaac Brewster Hazelton. The image was taken from a panoramic painting done by Hazelton showing seven soldiers running into battle with rifles in hand. The dynamic composition and sense of forward motion capture the spirit of camaraderie and patriotic duty that wartime propaganda aimed to inspire. At the bottom of the poster is an unused section for the location of a recruiting station.
The original poster dates to the early years of World War I, when the United States remained neutral but watched the escalating European conflict with increasing concern. It predates America’s formal entry into the war in 1917 but reflects growing nationalistic and preparedness sentiments circulating at the time. Posters like this were critical tools in the effort to build public support for eventual involvement and to lay the psychological groundwork for enlistment.
Isaac Brewster Hazelton was an American artist and illustrator active in the early 20th century, known for his vivid and emotionally evocative works. Based in New York, Hazelton’s paintings often centered around historical and military themes, and his work on this particular piece demonstrates a deep understanding of both artistic drama and psychological impact. As both a work of art and a historical artifact, Hazelton’s design captures the tense, transitional moment in American history when the country stood on the edge of global war.
