This is a fine print reproduction of a striking World War II recruitment poster, illustrated by Lester W. Bentley around 1943, promoted enlistment in the SPARS, the Women’s Reserve of the U.S. Coast Guard.
A confident young woman in uniform stands in the foreground, framed by the Coast Guard and American flags, with ship rigging behind her symbolizing maritime duty. Her poised figure embodies patriotism and resolve, urging women to join the wartime effort.
Formed in 1942 from the motto “Semper Paratus – Always Ready Service”, the SPARS enabled women to serve in clerical, communications, and logistical roles, freeing men for combat. Like the Navy’s WAVES and Army’s WACs, they marked a significant step in expanding women’s place in the military.
Bentley, himself a Coast Guard serviceman, presented the SPAR as both service member and national icon. With bold composition and proud symbolism, his work encouraged enlistment and helped redefine public views of women’s essential contributions to victory.
