This is a fine print reproduction of a beautifully detailed map of Virginia, published by Joseph H. Colton in New York in 1856, just five years before the outbreak of the American Civil War. Richly colored to distinguish individual counties, the map illustrates the state's extensive network of railroads, roads, rivers, canals, mountains, and towns. Two detailed inset maps highlight Richmond, Manchester, and Spring Hill, along with the important coastal communities of Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Gosport.
At the time of publication, Virginia was one of the largest and most influential states in the South, with an economy supported by agriculture, tobacco production, manufacturing, and an expanding railroad network. Richmond was a major commercial and industrial center, while Norfolk and Portsmouth served as important ports along the Chesapeake Bay. The map also captures the Appalachian Mountains, Shenandoah Valley, and vast western territories that would eventually become West Virginia.
Of particular historical interest, this map depicts Virginia before the division of the state during the Civil War. Following Virginia's secession from the Union in 1861, many western counties rejected Confederate control, ultimately leading to the creation of West Virginia on June 20, 1863. Colton's map preserves the boundaries of the original state seven years before this historic separation, offering a fascinating glimpse of Virginia during the final years of the antebellum South.
