Nort-Iutlande Subdiuisee en ses Quatre Dioeceses; Selande Fuynen ou Fionie Isles et Prouinces du Royaume de Danemarck
By: Nicolas Sanson
Date: 1679 (dated) Paris
Original Size: 21 x 16.25 inches (53.5 x 41.5 cm)
This is a fine print reproduction of a handsome map depicting the northern part of Jutland or Denmark, divided into four Dioceses: Borch, Wiborg, Arhusen, and Rypen. The original work was created by renowned French cartographer Nicolas Sanson in 1659.
The map offers a rich visual representation of the region, including towns, rivers, forests, and mountain ranges as understood in the 17th century. It is both a geographic document and an artistic work, capturing the political and ecclesiastical divisions of Denmark at the time.
A striking feature of the map is the elaborate title cartouche, adorned with human figures and symbolic elements. In this later state of the map, two unusual figures appear at the bottom of the cartouche—one faceless, the other headless, both with their hands tied behind their backs. These may represent themes of submission or lost identity, adding a mysterious layer to the cartographic artwork.
